Pilgrimage to the Shrine at Starkenburg
May 16, 2010
In the year 1847, the first settlers came to the area known as Rhineland or Loutre Island, along the Missouri River. The area was named "Starkenburg." The settlers were all Germans from the Hermann, Missouri area. They built a humble barn church and would have special services when traveling Priests came through. In this barn was a statue, which the Germans named "Weisse Dame" or "White Lady." The Parish was named after St. Martin, Bishop of Tours. Hermannhof pays homage to the Weisse Dame with a special white wine named in Her honor, "White Lady." Made in the style of a fine German Reisling, Hermannhof's White Lady is our perennial best-seller. The bottle label features the icon image of the White Lady of Starkenburg.
In the year 1852, the Parish of St. Martin constructed a humble log building, which would become the new home of the "White Lady." Whenever the parish conducted a procession on the extensive church grounds, they would carry Her in their midst. This public expression of Catholic devotion attracted the attention even of non-Catholics in the area. The tradition continues to this day with yearly Pilgrimages scheduled twice, a year with one held each Spring. The Shrine is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Of special note: the statuary, grotto, stenciled walls, tapestries, mosaics, stations of the cross, stained glass windows designed by Emil Frei Studios (Frei was from Germany), and the historic cemetery with stones dating back to the mid 1800s. As a place of respite and quiet repose, anyone who visits will be touched by the incredible beauty of the setting. For more information visit www.historicshrine.org.

Hermann Farm & Museum News
Missouri Artist Dinise Mustain's collage of flowers titled "Saturday In The Park" has been selected as the poster design for the 2010 Taste For the Arts to be held at the Hofgarten and Wagon Works on June 5th and 6th. Mustain taught herself the art of pressed botanicals. Most of the plant material is grown and collected on a farm along the bluffs of the Missouri River. Using the latest pressing and sealing techniques, Mustain creates art that preserves pieces of nature. On June 5th and 6th, you'll meet featured artists as they gather for one of Missouri's most unique art shows in a wonderful old world setting in the heart of Hermann, Missouri. Taste For the Arts is a celebration of fine art and crafts, foods, demonstrations, and music.
