Upcoming Events

sponsored by Hermannhof

Civil War Days at the Hermann Farm and Museum will take place on May 15th and 16th at the Stable and Forge on Gutenberg during Maifest weekend. Members of the 5th Cavalry Regiment will be in town to re-dedicate the tombstone of Captain Charles Manwaring, one of Hermann's Civil War casualties. Manwaring was a member of the Gasconade County Reserve Battalion. He was later appointed to the position of Provost Marshall. Manwaring was killed by a party of rebels as he was attempting to arrest one of them on the riverfront. Capt. Manwaring's death took place on May 14th, 1864.

Manwaring's grave site is at the top of the bluff overlooking the Missouri River on Hermann Farm.   The dedication of the grave site, with full military honors, is sponsored by the Hermann Farm and Museum and funded by the Dierberg Educational Foundation.

The replica Civil War gravestone for Manwaring was donated by the United States Veterans Administration upon the recommendation of the 5th Cavalry Regiment.

The FIVE  S’s of Wine Tasting

  • See the wine- Pour the wine into a wine glass and hold the glass up to the light. Study the color. You are looking for clarity and brilliance.

  • Swirl the wine- Holding the stem of the wine glass lightly, pick up the glass and swirl the wine around. This is to achieve several purposes; You are allowing the wine to breathe and to pick up the essence of the glass.  As you swirl your wine, notice how the wine hits the sides of the glass and then falls back down.  This is known as the “legs” of the wine, giving those knowledgeable enough clues as to how full-bodied the wine actually is.
  • Sniff- Raise the glass to your nose and sniff deeply, taking in the full impact of the bouquet rising up to meet your nose.
  • Sip- Now, sip the wine. Your mouth will confirm what your sense of smell has detected. A dry red wine with tannins will leave you with what they call the “pucker factor.”  A fruity sweetened wine will sit on the tongue.
  • Savor- As you gently swirl the wine around in your mouth, savor the flavor. You are checking for the balance of the blends; for each wine bottle is not just the end product of one type of grape, but a carefully planned blend of several types. Some wines contain not just the juice of the grape, but also the stems and the seeds.

Winter Hours
