Antique Fiddle Head

Musician Terry Lippe takes the name of “Aramenter Parker” during her Civil War musical performances. The real Aramenter Parker was an ancestor of Lippe's who lived during the Civil War. Her life inspired Lippe's love of the music and instruments of that era.

On May 15th at 11:00, Lippe will play musical instruments from the Civil War era, most notably a minstrel banjo of the 1860's, an 1820's fiddle, an 1860's guitar and a claw hammered banjo.

Old hymns, soldier songs, and folk tunes will all be part of her repertoire for the Civil War Days at Hermann Farm & Museum on May 15th beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Performances will be in the  Wagon Works on  Gutenberg. Music will be from old collections of Civil War songs, including renditions of "Amazing Grace," "Sweet Hour

of Prayer," "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and musical numbers from the movie "Cold Mountain."

Lippe studied at the Folk School in Mountain View, Arkansas. She will be accompanied by Lois Clay-Quest who studied traditional music at Washington University when she "found her voice" in the rural traditions of early folk ballads. She attended the Folk School in Maplewood, Missouri and the John C Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC. For more information about this event contact Hermann Farm & Museum at 573-486-3276.

Hermannhof Courtyard Transformed

Construction on Hermannhof's courtyard is just about complete.  The new pergola is impressive, welcoming, and will make the outdoor space in the Hermannhof courtyard very special.  This gorgeous addition has transformed the area into a delightful place for our guests to congregate for lunches or meetings.

As the weather warms, guests would rather spend intimate times under the shady pergola rather than indoors.  The pergola has added a romantic mood to the outdoor courtyard and is an excellent area for parties, weddings or receptions.   It has enhanced the outdoor landscape behind the winery and created a quiet sitting area for sipping a glass of wine, or reflecting on the views and scenery behind the historic Hermannhof Winery building with views to the Missouri River and historic Hermann, Missouri.

Please schedule larger parties/events prior to arrival by contacting our event coordinator Molly Saak at 1-888-268-1422.

"Come Home"

to Hermann Antique Show

The legacy continues with the Hermann Antique Show

as it celebrates another spring presenting exquisite American primitives, glassware, quilts, pottery, early paintings, furniture, stoneware and decorative items offered by some of America's finest dealers.

The Hermann Antique  Show attracts discerning buyers from across America who enjoy the sophisticated exhibits, visiting with the dealers, and shopping a wide selection of antiques and decorative arts from museum quality pieces to unseen finds that emerge at one of mid-Missouri's finest shows.

This show has become a source for museum curators, discerning collectors, plus it is a fun way for new collectors to learn from the best in each field of collecting.

Due to requests for more space, the Hofgarten venue will be open this year with additional exhibitors.

Last year's crowd proved this show is destined to become one of the best in the Midwest.

Rosarian Display

Stop by the Rosarian display at the upcoming Maifest Civil War Days event at the Wagon Works on Gutenberg and learn all about “rose wranglers.” These are rose enthusiasts who seek out and secure old, non-hybrid roses growing neglected on old farms and fields– sometimes with permission and sometimes by stealth. These rose wranglers made the whole rose culture seem fun and exciting. Their enthusiasm for the cause convinced many there is merit to the old ways of roses.

You'll meet Rebecca Ruediger, a Rosarian from Texas, who will offer help and advice for creating an early theme rose garden much like a pioneer gardener might have done here in the 1860's.    A "Rosarian" dedicates their life to the study and propagation of early roses.  Rebecca's Hermann, Missouri antique rose garden has been on Hermann Garden Club tours.

Catalogs will be available from the Texas based company "Rose Emporium" whose goal has been to give credibility to these heirloom plants. Many gardeners find themselves part of a recent upsurge of interest in antique roses. Rosarian Rebecca Ruediger knows from personal experience that there is no way one can begin to appreciate the versatility of these roses without spending a few seasons of working with them.

Nothing we say here will substitute for the benefits of hands-on experience, but we at Hermann Farm & Museum hope to answer enough questions and generate enough enthusiasm at this special informal lecture event to launch you into the world of old roses with confidence. Be aware, however, that these are captivating plants, and once taken with them, you may never be the same.   Rebecca will be at the Wagon Works on May 15th and 16th from 10-3 each day.

For more information call the Hermann Farm office at 573-486-3276.

Winemaker's Notes:

The Versatile Vidal Blanc:

Hermannhof, like many other wineries east of the Rockies, grows a considerable amount of Vidal Blanc grapes.

Vidal Blanc is a French American hybrid grape created by Jean Louis Vidal in the 1940’s.

He developed this varietal by crossing the European grape Ugni Blanc, also known to the Italians as Trebbiano, with an already established hybrid Rayon d’Or (Siebel). His work was done in the Charentes region of France, known for its chalky soils.

The grape showed promising potential to produce a high quality wine.

Vidal Blanc is well adapted to the continental climate challenges most mid-western and eastern vineyards experience. The grape has a thick skin which helps for disease resistance and is less prone to bird damage. It also buds out later in the spring making it less vulnerable to late frosts.

Vidal ripens the latest of our white varietals, allowing the natural acids to remain. This acidity makes Vidal versatile in the style of wines it can produce.

We use Vidal in our Brut Reserve and it holds up well (we’ve just disgorged Vidal champagne that’s over twenty years old!)

We also make Vidal in a dry fruity style often compared to Pinot Grigio, and the semi-sweet Vidal we produce is a component of our White Lady blend.

Vidal is often used to make excellent  late-harvest wines and even ice wines.

So here’s a toast to Jean Louis Vidal for a job well done!

Cheers,
